| $26 million in upgrades bound for Michigan airports

Eighteen projects ready to fly following Michigan Aeronautics Commission approval
|
From Detroit to Sault Ste. Marie, 17 airports across the state soon will invest $25.7 million in federal, state and local transportation funds to improve the safety and accessibility of air travel.
The Michigan Aeronautics Commission has approved proposals for runway resurfacing, new taxistreets, security measures, terminal construction, land acquisitions, design engineering and various other aviation improvements.
"Michigan airports play an important role in providing access to quick and cost-effective air travel between places virtually anywhere in the Great Lakes state," said State Transportation Director Gregory J. Rosine. "We are pleased to keep these much needed improvements on course to help businesses and individuals reach their destinations safely and efficiently."
The commission's action authorizes federal and/or state funds to be used on the following:
· $11.75 million to Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport in Romulus for various improvement projects.
· $5.5 million to Detroit Willow Run Airport in Detroit for upgrading substations in hangar No. 1, installing an electrical service-security system and security badging system, and replacing elevator in hangar No. 1
· $2.5 million to Bishop International Airport in Flint for rehabilitating runway 9/27 and taxiway C - phase II/III.
· $1.59 million to Detroit City Airport in Detroit for land acquisition, demolition, master plan, runway safety area study and railroad study.
· $920,000 to Chippewa County International Airport in Sault Ste. Marie for constructing terminal - final phase, and constructing T-hangars.
· $800,000 to Price's Airport in Linden for runway extension, parallel taxiway and tie-downs.
· $775,000 to Detroit Willow Run Airport in Detroit for airfield signing.
· $452,000 to Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City for terminal building - phase III and sewer/water - part A.
· $333,333 to Canton-Plymouth-Mettetal Airport in Plymouth for security fencing, paved tie-down area, taxistreets and hangar site preparation.
· $288,000 to James Clements Airport in Bay City for rehabilitation of runway 5/23.
· $270,334 to Three Rivers Municipal/Dr. Haines Airport in Three Rivers for land acquisition, environmental assessment for runway extension.
· $199,000 to Mason County Airport in Ludington for phase II of parking apron demolition and expansion, security fencing and apron lighting.
· $166,667 to Ann Arbor Municipal Airport in Ann Arbor for access road construction, apron expansion and perimeter fencing.
· $77,000 to Wexford County Airport in Cadillac for land acquisition.
· $30,000 to St. Clair County International Airport in Port Huron for runway 10/28 precision approach path indicators.
· $28,000 to Gladwin -Zettel in Gladwin for designing parallel taxiway and fencing.
· $21,000 to Lakeview-Griffith Field in Lakeview for designing apron rehabilitation.
· $20,000 to Marlette Township Airport in Marlette for constructing taxistreets and sealing cracks.
The commission's approval clears the way for issuance of the federal portion of the funds. Federal and state dollars for airport development come primarily from restricted, user-generated funds. The primary sources of revenue are aviation fuel, passenger taxes and aircraft registration fees.
