September 22, 2003 -- The Michigan Aeronautics Commission has approved more than $28 million in grants to improve the state's system of public-use airports. The purchase of security enhancements, runway restoration projects and snow removal equipment will now be possible at various airports across the state.
"Investing in our system of airports is vital to the state and national economy, and central to our transportation mission," said Director of Multi-modal Transportation Services Bureau Rob Abent. "Keeping airports open for use and regularly maintained is our highest priority. These projects are key to continuing the flow of goods and people in a safe and reliable manner."
The commission approved funds for the following projects:
– $21,000 to Branch County Memorial Airport in Coldwater for runway modifications;
– $797,900 to Detroit City Airport in Detroit for taxiway rehabilitation;
– $7,500,000 to Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport in Detroit for a noise study and noise attenuation;
– $330,000 to Delta County Airport in Escanaba terminal expansion;
– $117,263 to Bishop International Airport in Flint for the installation of Explosive Trace Detection equipment and a Master Plan Update;
– $562,000 to Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids for security system improvement reimbursements;
– $110,000 to Houghton County Memorial Airport in Hancock for the purchase of snow removal equipment, designs for runway lighting, and safety improvements;
– $27,000 to Ionia County Airport in Ionia for wetland mitigation for the construction of a taxiway;
– $7,094,686 to Sawyer International Airport in Marquette for fuel farm expansion, hangar improvements, installation of air traffic control tower equipment, and the construction of a storage building;
– $130,071 to Muskegon County Airport in Muskegon for security enhancements;
–$61,111 to Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City for Runway Safety Area improvements; and,
– $28,200 to Paradise Area Airport in Whitefish Township for a site feasibility study.
The commission's decision clears the way for issuance of the federal portion of the funds. Federal and state dollars for airport development come primarily from restricted, user-generated funds. The primary sources of revenue are aviation fuel, passenger taxes and aircraft registration fees.
