Census geographic entities are organized by the U.S. Bureau of the Census into hierarchies for tabulating and reporting statistics. These entities include a range of geography from census blocks (the smallest and most numerous type of geographic entity) to an entity for the entire United States. The general concept of a metropolitan or micropolitan statistical area is that of a core area containing a substantial population nucleus, together with adjacent communities having a high degree of social and economic integration with that core. Metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas comprise one or more entire counties.
