Competitions and Scholarships

  • Coleopterists Society’s Youth Incentive Award
    The international organization of professionals and hobbyists interested in the study of beetles is recognizing young people (grades 7–12) who are studying beetles.  Monetary grants of $150 dollars are given; those awarded will also receive an additional monetary award in the form of an equipment credit from the BioQuip Products catalog, as well as a one-year subscription to the society’s journal, The Coleopterists Bulletin.  The society encourages proposals on topics such as field collecting, attendance at workshops or visits to entomology or natural history museums, studies of beetle biology, and much more.  Proposals will be assessed on their creativity, educational value, scientific merit, feasibility, and financial planning.  To learn more visit the Coleopterists Society’s website.

  • DCAT "Making a Difference" Award
    Apply on the NSTA website for a $2,500 award for expanding the winning science program.  Middle level (grades 6-12) science teachers with innovative programs are encouraged to apply. 

         Deadline to apply is November 30, 2009.

  • River of Words’ Young Poet Contest
    River of Words conducts a free international poetry and art contest for youth, this year focusing on the theme of dwelling in a watershed.  About 100 poems and works of art from both US and international entries are selected as finalists each year. All winners receive ribbons, books and/or art supplies, t-shirts and other prizes.

          Deadline: December 1, 2009


  • Spirit of Innovation Awards
    The Spirit of Innovation Awards is an annual competition that challenges teams of high school students to create innovative products for use in one of four categories: aerospace exploration, space nutrition, renewable energy and green schools.

         Deadline to apply is December 15, 2009.

  • Disney’s Planet Challenge
    Disney’s Planet Challenge, a project-based environmental competition for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classrooms, empowers kids with a way to make a positive impact on the world around them.  Teachers can use the Challenge and provided sample lesson plans to encourage environmental stewardship in their students.  Prizes range from classroom grants to a class trip to Disneyland.

         Registration closes December 18, 2009.

  • DuPont Challenge Science Essay Competition
    DuPont Challenge© Science Essay Competition gets students writing about science! Students in seventh through 12th grade research and write a 700 to 1,000-word essay about a scientific discovery, theory, event or technological application that has captured their interest. Created to honor the Challenger astronauts, students can win savings bonds up to $5,000, and a trip to Walt Disney World and to the Kennedy Space Center. Teachers win too! Along with the trips with their students, teachers can also win $500 grants. Students have the opportunity to be inspired, to be creative, and to tell a story in this essay about any scientific topic. Teachers can use this competition to motivate students to reach beyond themselves and push the limits! To learn more about the competition, check out the website by following the link above. 

          Entries will be accepted from December 1, 2009 until January 31, 2010.

  • Environmental Stewardship Poster Contest
    The “Arbor Day National Poster Contest” (sponsored by Toyota) helps educate fifth-grade students about trees and environmental stewardship.  The 2010 theme is “Trees are Terrific. . .& Energy Wise!”.  Learn more and find the complete details of the competition at Arbor Day website.

  • High School Citizen Scientists Paper Competition
    Youth ages 13-16 are invited to submit original scientific research or position papers to the Citizen Science Technical Board for the 2010 CitizenScience paper competition. Papers should be written for a non-scientific audience on natural or social science topics related to the economic, social, technological or environmental dimensions of sustainable development addressed by the current session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development. UN CSD-18’s topics are:  Transport, Chemicals, Waste Management (Hazardous & Solid Waste), Mining, and 10 Year Framework of Programs on Sustainable Consumption & Production Patterns.

         Deadline: March 1, 2010

  • NASA Challenges and Online Games: Buzz Lightyear
    Mission Patch Design Challenge:
    Students ages 6-12 will have the opportunity to design a patch to commemorate Buzz Lightyear's mission on the International Space Station and his accomplishment of being the longest serving space ranger. The student with the most creative mission patch and 100-word essay will win a tour of NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida and a trip to Walt Disney World Resort. NASA will fly the winning patch into space then present it to the contest winner.

    Kids in Micro-g Experiment Challenge:
    Students in the fifth through eighth grades are encouraged to devise experiments to be conducted aboard the space station. The 12 winning experiments will be performed by the end of the school year and videotaped for the winning schools.
  • Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program
    The US Fish and Wildlife Service contest is for young people (grades K-12) to submit a stamp design in their own state contest. Winners from each state compete in National contest. Prizes include cash, and a visit to Washington, DC, for the National winner, a parent, and their art teacher. Free curriculum guide available upon request.

  • A&WMA's High School Essay Contest
    "Greenhouse Gas Management Actions: What Can Students Do?" is the topic for this essay. High School students, grades 9-12, are asked to discuss global climate change and greenhouse gas management. The winning author will receive an invitation to an awards ceremony in Portland, OR and $400 in prize money.

  • Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes
    The Gloria Barron prize was designed for children and young adults that seek to make a positive difference for people and the planet. The top ten nominations will each receive a $2,000 stipend to use toward enhancing their project or to use toward their higher education goals. If you know of a young child that desires to make a positive change in their environment you are encouraged to nominate them for consideration.

  • Classroom Connection
    A teacher networking program that recognizes and rewards exemplary teaching in classrooms. Sponsored by Xcel Energy Foundation and available to teachers throughout the service territory   of Xcel Energy. The program is a 'teacher led network' where teachers develop and test their projects, and share curriculum on their successful programs." Deadline: Ongoing

  • Knowles Science and Mathematics Teaching Fellowships
    The Knowles Science Teaching foundation (KSTF) is accepting applications for its group of Teaching Fellows.  If you have at least a bachelor’s degree in a physical science, biological science, engineering, or mathematics and what to teach science or math in U.S. high schools, then they want you!  The fellowship supports both individuals’ professional and financial needs for up to five years.
