Grants and Funding Opportunities

Although some of the application deadlines have already passed, we have left them on our site because some of the opportunities may repeat again the following year.

Name the Hab Challenge The mission for students in the "Name the Hab" Challenge is to propose a name for this revolutionary inflatable habitat. As they propose a name, students will need to explain why this name should be used. The name should reflect the potential uses of inflatable habitats on Earth and other worlds. The name can be an acronym for a longer title, or a name that has some functional, historic, or other compelling significance.  The winner will be announced from Antarctica in January 2009.

Sea World/Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards
Environmental Excellence Awards recognize the outstanding efforts of students and teachers across the country who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment. Schools and community groups with significant accomplishments in their environmental projects are invited to apply for the awards.
Applications due by November 28, 2008

Mini Grants for Educators.    

DTE Energy is looking for proposals from Michigan K-12 teachers, for the Energy & Our World Mini Grants for Educators Program.  This program supports projects that help students understand energy and how it impacts the world by offering resources for those hands-on projects that reach beyond the resources of most school budgets. Do you have an idea for a special project that helps students understand energy and how it impacts our world - but need resources to launch it? DTE can help!  Deadline is November 28, 2008 .

Captain Planet Foundation Grants    The Captain Planet Foundation accepts applications for funding projects that help students better grasp environmental issues. Projects must promote understanding of environmental issues, focus on hands-on activities, involve students ages 6 to 18, promote interaction and cooperation within a group, help young people develop planning and problem-solving skills, include adult supervision, and commit to follow-up communication with the Foundation. Proposals due December 31, 2008

National Education Association Student Achievement Grants

The NEA Foundation provides grants to improve the academic achievement of students in U.S. public schools and public higher education institutions in any subject area(s). The proposed work should engage students in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen their knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The work should also improve students' habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection. Applications may be submitted at any time, and educators of students from Pre K through college are invited to apply.

Future Fisherman Foundation Grants available Through their partnership with the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation , the Future Fisherman Foundation has developed the Physh Ed grants initiative which offers grants in the amount of $2,500 to certified teachers in public, private or charter schools. These grants, training, and other services help prepare teachers to launch fishing and boating programs in schools across the country. Grants are awarded to schools to offer fishing and boating education programs as a part of a cross curricular curriculum that meets state academic standards. For questions regarding the Physh Ed application process, please email the Foundation at futurefisherman@asafishing.org .  All applications must be submitted electronically to peapp@asafishing.org no later than Monday January 19, 2009 by 5:00 PM .  

Kid's Science Challenge     The Kids' Science Challenge is an NSF funded nationwide competition for third to sixth graders. Students learn about science and engineering in four categories: Flavor Science, Water Quality, Skateboard Engineering, and the Search for Life in Outer Space (SETI). They enter the competition by coming up with an experiment or a problem for real scientists and engineers to solve! Winning entries receive cool prizes and get to collaborate with the scientists to turn their ideas into realities. Deadline for entries is January 31, 2009.

Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grant Program Lowe's Toolbox for Education K-12 Grant Program is accepting grant applications from nonprofit public K-12 schools or parent groups associated with a nonprofit public K-12 school who are seeking funding for projects that have a permanent impact on the school facility (both indoor and outdoor). For application procedures and sample projects, visit the Toolbox for Education Web site. Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation is dedicated to supporting parent-teacher groups at schools across the U.S. For the 2008-2009 school year, the first deadline is on October 17, 2008 and the second deadline is on February 13, 2009 .

NSTA SciGuides Grant links This site provides links to other sites that offer grants for hardware and software for the use of internet in the classroom.  There are also links to sites that offer information and guidance on how to write a grant proposal. 

Participate in MonarchLIVE and be eligible for special PLT GreenWorks! Funding Special GreenWorks! Butterfly Garden Grants are available for teachers and students participating in Monarch Live: A Distance Learning Adventure.   As a lead partner in MonarchLIVE, Project Learning Tree is providing GreenWorks! funding for participating teachers. Grants of up to $1,000 are available for schools to create butterly gardens in their schoolyard or community. Through MonarchLIVE, your classroom can join a series of free live, interactive field trips that follow the magical migration of monarchs. Deadline is December 1, 2008 . 

Life and Work on the Moon Art Contest   NASA invites high school and college students from the arts, including industrial design, architecture, computer design and the fine arts, to submit their work on the theme "Life and Work on the Moon." Entries will be accepted in three categories:  two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and digital, including video. Entries will be evaluated not only on their artistic qualities, but also on whether they depict a valid scenario. Prizes include awards and exhibit opportunities. The deadline is March 15, 2009 .

We Can Change the World Competition  NSTA, the Siemens Foundation, and Discovery Communications are launching a new sustainability education competition for middle school students to develop innovative green solutions for their schools, homes, and communities. This national middle school competition will involve a team of students identifying, researching, and recommending a solution to an environmental problem in their community. The competition will expand to kindergarten and elementary students in 2009 and to high school students in 2010. Applications accepted from September 16, 2008 through March 15, 2009.

Middle School Sustainability Challenge The Siemens Foundation invites middle school students to participate in the We Can Change the World Challenge. The Challenge offers a unique way for middle school student teams to create sustainable local solutions that can have global impact. It's the first and only national sustainability education initiative aligned to national standards and classroom objectives. Awards include, but are not limited to, Savings Bonds, TV appearances, cameras, and travel. Deadline is March 15, 2009. 

Environmental Excellence Awards     The SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund is requesting proposals for the SeaWorld/Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards.  This program recognizes the outstanding efforts of students and teachers across the United States who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment.  $80,000 expected to be available, eight awards anticipated.  Deadline: November 18, 2008 .  

Nestle Very Best in Youth Program
The Nestle Very Best in Youth Program honors young people (ages 13-18) who have excelled in school and who are making their community and the world a better place. The winners will be featured in a special publication and will receive a trip with a parent or legal guardian to
Los Angeles for the Nestlé Very Best In Youth awards ceremony in July 2009. The trip will include round-trip air travel, hotel accommodations for three nights, and $500 in spending money. In addition, Nestlé will donate $1,000 in the name of each winner to the charity of his or her choice. All applicants must apply by November 20th, 2008.

President's Environmental Youth Awards (PEYA)  

The annual PEYA program honors a wide variety of environmental projects developed by young individuals to promote environmental awareness and encourage positive community involvement.

Projects submitted in the past have covered a wide range of subject areas including recycling programs in schools and communities; construction of nature preserves; major tree planting programs; videos, skits, and newsletters created by students that focused on environmental issues; and environmental science projects. To be eligible to compete, a student or students, sponsored by an adult, must submit to their local EPA regional office evidence of a completed project as defined in the PEYA application, as well as a completed application. Deadline: December 31, 2008 .

Toyota Tapestry Grants for Science Teachers Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., and National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) are pleased to announce the 19th annual Toyota TAPESTRY Grants for Science Teachers program. This year Toyota will award $550,000 in grants to K-12 teachers of science. A total of 50 large grants of up to $10,000 each, along with 20-30 mini-grants of up to $2,500 each, will be awarded. Categories include environmental science, integrating literacy and science, and physical science. Toyota has awarded 986 grants totaling over $8 million in this premiere nationwide grant program.  For further information and to begin the application process online, please visit the Toyota TAPESTRY website, http://www.nsta.org/pd/tapestry/

The online applications are now available. All 50 large grant winners receive an all-expenses paid trip to the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in New Orleans. The deadline is January 21, 2009 .  

Volvo Adventure Awards In collaboration with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Volvo Adventure Award honors young people creating their own environmental projects.  There are two competitions for the 2009 awards.  The Adventure Award is for youth, ages thirteen to sixteen, working in groups of two to five that are actively participating in the management and design of the project.  The second competition is the Great Big Bob the Bunny Cartoon contest for youth under the age of thirteen, to create a cartoon picture using Bob the bunny.  Deadline is January 31, 2009 .

Sylvan Dell Publishing Announces Educational Resource GrantThe grant provides a free, one-year site license (2008/2009 school year) for unlimited access to 35 Sylvan Dell eBooks, featuring flipviewer technology with selectable English and Spanish text and audio. Grants will be awarded to one elementary school per district and open to every district in the United States and Canada. Each science, math, or nature themed picture-book includes a "For Creative Minds" educational section. Teaching activities and interactive quizzes are available free online. Deadline varies. 

All Roads Grant Project: The National Geographic All Roads Seed Grant Program offers grants to indigenous and underrepresented minority-culture filmmakers creating films using first-person storytelling to highlight their lives and communities. Grants awarded up to a maximum of $10,000 each. Deadline: Quarterly.

Build an Outdoor Classroom at Your School Grants
Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper, and National Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine outdoor classroom grant program to help schools improve their science curriculum by engaging students in hands-on experiences outside the traditional classroom. Grants up to $2,000 will be awarded to at least 100 schools and grants for up to $20,000 may be awarded to schools or school districts with major outdoor classroom projects.  Applications accepted throughout the year.

Classroom Materials Donation Forum
Teachers looking for materials for classroom activities need look no further than DonorsChoose.org. This website offers a unique opportunity for individuals to donate to the education and enrichment of young children across the country. The website is designed so that teachers are able to petition for any relevant material they may need but are currently unable to obtain. Teachers simply ask for specific materials that they desire for a particular project, and members of the community donate funds toward these proposals. Deadline: Requests accepted throughout the year.

The EGA is a voluntary association of foundations and giving programs concerned with the protection of the natural environment. Various Ongoing Grants Available.

Environmental Grantmaking Foundations

Environmental Research and Education Foundation Grants
Provide grants for waste industry research and education, as well as scholarships for environmental scientists. Various Ongoing Grants Available.

EPA Funding Directory for Environmental Projects
"Funding Opportunities: A Directory of Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, and Environmental Protection Assistance Programs" provides an extensive list of grants available from EPA, other federal agencies, state governments, and private foundations. Grants are organized by topic, with detailed descriptions and contact information for each grant. Earth Day Network's National Civic Education Project

The National Civic Education Project (NCEP) is Earth Day Network's grant program which supports urban high school teachers as they promote civic and environmental education in their schools. Through the NCEP, teachers and their students take civic action to improve the environmental health of their schools and communities. Deadline: Ongoing

The Grants and Fund Development Center The Grants and Fund Development Center was established by the Wayne Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) to assist in the procurement of additional funding for public education. Its mission is to help RESA provide innovative programs and services to schools in Wayne County and to build the capacity of schools to use the grant-seeking process to obtain the supplementary funds needed to provide all Wayne County students with equitable access to quality educational programs.

Great Lake Basin Program for Erosion and Sediment Control Funding
Eligible applicants include units of state, county and municipal government; tribal authorities; watershed councils; soil and water conservation districts; academic institutions; environmental groups; and other non-federal public entities or nonprofit organizations in the United States. Great Lakes Protection Fund
Funds projects that lead to tangible improvements in the health of the
Great Lakes ecosystem, promote the interdependence of healthy ecological and economic systems, and are innovative, creative, and venturesome. Deadline: awarded quarterly (March, June, Sept., Dec.).

Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools (IAQ TFS) Awards Program
With three tiers of awards (Great Start, Leadership, and Excellence awards), EPA recognizes schools and districts at various stages of implementing proactive IAQ management programs. This system allows schools to receive recognition at each step as they proceed with implementing successful IAQ programs EPA is honored to present the 2005 IAQ TfS Awards Program that will recognize schools and school districts demonstrating a strong commitment to improving children's health and indoor air quality. Typical award recipients are those schools and school districts that  assume a leadership role, heighten overall public awareness of IAQ  issues, and encourage public support for programs aimed at improving children's health in our nation's schools.  To download an application form, visit EPA's IAQ TfS Awards Program Web site. Applications are accepted year-round.

Qwest for Education
Qwest for Education focuses on enriching the lives of children by supporting solid K-12 educational programs. The Foundation will consider programs that support innovative models to strengthen K-12 public school education, improvement of skills and leadership of educators, and effective use of technology to improve K-12 public school instruction.  Various Ongoing Grants Available.

Mott Foundation
The Mott Foundation facilitates effective planning, networking, organizing and communication among individuals and groups fighting for environmental, economic and social justice. Lists more than 400 people of color, grant opportunities, resource and legal groups from 40 states,  WashingtonD.C.,

Profits for the Planet Program
Stonyfield Farm's Profits for the Planet Program (PFP) provides funding to efforts that affect positive and meaningful change and have measurable outcomes. In addition to funds, Stonyfield Farm also donates product to organizations. Applications accepted throughout the year.

Water Quality Monitoring Volunteer Opportunity
Five volunteer organizations have been awarded grants by the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps) to assist the state of 
Michigan in monitoring water quality.  These grants were awarded through the MiCorps Volunteer Stream Monitoring Program, which provides specialized training so that these volunteer groups would be able to obtain high-quality data on the state's water resources.  Some of the work these volunteer organizations will be doing include monitoring small water-dwelling organisms, such as worms or mollusks, which can be affected by change in water quality as well as providing food for fish and other higher organisms.  They also will be looking for traces of pollution by monitoring the water's chemistry.


Young Explorers Grant
The National Geographic Society's Young Explorers Grants for 18-25 year-olds to pursue research, exploration, and conservation-related projects consistent with National Geographic's existing grant programs. Grants vary in amount ($2,000 to $5,000) depending on the significance of the project. Deadline: Open

Youth Venture
Youth Venture provides seed money grants of up to $1,000 for new youth-created, youth-led, sustainable ventures that benefit the community. Youth ages 12-20 who want to start a new ongoing environmental club or organization can get guidance on how to plan, organize, and launch their venture, along with funds for start-up expenses. Lowe's Outdoor Classroom Grants
Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper and National Geographic Explorer classroom magazine have partnered to create an outdoor classroom grant program to provide schools with additional resources to improve their science curriculum by engaging students in hands-on experiences outside the traditional classroom. All K-12 public schools in the
United States are welcome to apply. Applications accepted throughout the year.
