NFIP Map Modernization County Status

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has begun a 5 Flooding -year program to update the nation's floodplain maps. This program is commonly referred to as Map Mod. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is collaborating with FEMA in this effort through the Cooperating Technical Partners (CTP) Program. The MDEQ is playing an integral role in the mapping program by performing studies, reviewing studies prepared by others, and overseeing the mapping effort in Michigan. The following projects are currently underway:

Countywide studies are completed in Berrien, Cass, Lapeer, Macomb, and Oakland counties.
Preliminary maps are now available for Barry, Branch, Genesee, Huron, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Midland, Van Buren, and Washtenaw counties.
Preliminary maps for Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, St. Clair, Shiawassee, and Wayne counties are expected to be available by the end of 2008.
Preliminary maps for Calhoun, Muskegon, Isabella, Ottawa, Sanilac, St. Joseph, and Tuscola counties are expected to be available by the spring 2009.
Mapping studies are underway for Allegan, Bay, Hillsdale, Ionia, Lenawee, Manistee, Muskegon, Osceola, and Saginaw counties.

Once FEMA has completed its production of new digital flood insurance rate maps for a county, the communities within the county will need to consider formal adoption of the new maps to either become eligible to join the NFIP or to maintain participation. The MDEQ has developed model documents for communities to use for the adoption process. The Grand River (Ottawa County) is an example of a preliminary floodplain map.

The Flood Insurance Study (FIS) for Berrien County is now available:

The DFIRMs for Berrien County, the City of Vassar in Tuscola County, and others will be posted to the Michigan Geographic Data Library. Until they are posted, we can provide completed DFIRMs via our FTP site. Please contact Bruce Menerey, 517-335-3181.
