Since 1994, the Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program (RETAP) has assisted businesses across Michigan with pollution prevention through free on-site assessments.

The program recently completed its 1,000th on-site pollution prevention assessment, a milestone recognized as a key component in the Department of Environmental Quality’s efforts to reduce the amount of environmental waste generated in the state, and an example of how technical assistance focused on pollution prevention is compatible with economic growth in Michigan.

“RETAP is a clear demonstration of the DEQ's commitment to both protecting our environment and growing our economy,” said DEQ Director Steven E. Chester. “The program provides businesses with the opportunity to improve their operations, while at the same time reducing their costs.”

RETAP assessments are strictly confidential, non-regulatory, and performed only at the request of the business. Any business with fewer than 500 employees and all universities and governmental agencies are eligible for a RETAP assessment. A written report detailing specific recommendations to save money, increase energy efficiency, eliminate waste generation, mitigate risks, and promote a positive public image is provided to the business within 60 days of the assessment. There are no obligations to implement the recommendations; however, businesses assisted through the RETAP have reported savings ranging from several thousand to well over $100,000 annually.

J.P. Brooks of Accu-Shape Die Cutting, Inc. in Genessee County, highlighted his company's success with the program. “We expect that our annual savings on the items implemented would save $6,000,” said Mr. Brooks. “Our ultimate savings exceeded $10,000 on one RETAP recommendation and $2,000 per month on others. We highly recommend the RETAP program to any company.”

RETAP was among the nation’s first pollution prevention technical assistance programs when established in 1994, and was recognized as one of the nation’s best when awarded the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable’s Most Valuable Pollution Prevention Program Award in 2003.
