Michigan Commission for the Blind Celebrates 30th Anniversary at Capitol

September 24, 2008-Today the Michigan Commission for the Blind (MCB) celebrated its 30th anniversary of providing services to people in Michigan who are blind or visually impaired with a brief program in the Capitol Rotunda at 11 a.m. The program featured success stories of blind and visually impaired clients of the commission, who spoke about their adjustment to sight loss, the training and other opportunities they received from the Michigan Commission for the Blind, and their current activities and accomplishments. Invited guests included representatives of community organizations that partner with MCB in helping to make these success stories possible.

These were the speakers at the celebration: 
  • Patrick Cannon, State Director, Michigan Commission for the Blind (Master of Ceremonies) 
  • Andy Levin, Deputy Director, Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth 
  • Sen. John Gleason, Michigan Senate District 27  (Although Senator Gleason was scheduled to speak, the Legislature was in session and he was unable to attend this event.)
  • Larry Woods, MCB client/consumer, East Lansing 
  • Diana Schmitthausler, MCB client/consumer, Lansing 
  • Ron Tardy, MCB client/consumer, East Lansing 
  • Dolores Gillett, MCB client/consumer, Jackson 
  • Crystal LaFleche, MCB client/consumer, Lansing


After the program, refreshments were provided courtesy of Mark Rothenhauser, the MCB Business Enterprise Program snack stand operator in the State Capitol building.

The Michigan Commission for the Blind provides training and other opportunities for individuals who are blind or visually impaired to achieve independence and/or employment, annually serving more than 4,500 state residents. MCB was established on October 1, 1978, by P.A. 260 of 1978 and is celebrating its 30th year of providing services with a series of events throughout the state.
