August 4, 2009 - Michigan Career and Technical Education (MCTI) students made a positive impact at Green Gables Haven by donating $430 to the community shelter located in Hastings. This is the third time that MCTI students have raised funds for a charity in Barry County.
"Through these types of activities, our students are learning what a positive impact they can make by volunteering and giving back to those less fortunate in the community," said MCTI Executive Director Dennis Hart. "We're proud of their efforts toward the donation that's going to such a worthy cause."
Students in the MCTI Customer Service training program were assigned to research nine charities in Barry County and learn what each charity offered to individuals in need within the community. After voting, students selected Green Gables Haven. The class sold Ozark Delight Lollipops, made in the Ozarks by a family owned company and available only to schools as a fundraising activity. With 40 different flavors for sale, the class sold 738 lollipops raising $270 and accepted an additional $160 in donations.
According to Green Gables Haven Executive Director Janie Bergeron, the donation will be used to support the wide range of services provided to victims of domestic abuse and their children who reside at the shelter.
The Michigan Career and Technical Institute has provided vocational and technical training for adults with disabilities in Michigan since 1944. MCTI offers a unique blend of caring support services and state-of-the-art training for competitive employment in business and industry today. MCTI operates under the auspices of the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth, Michigan Rehabilitation Services. Customer Service is one of 12 vocational training programs offered at MCTI. Other vocational training areas include: automotive technology, cabinetmaking/millwork, culinary arts, custodial, electronics servicing, graphic communications, grounds maintenance, office automation, machine technology, certified nursing assistant, and retail marketing.
