November 10, 2009 -Governor Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed November "Hire a Veteran Month" in Michigan, as a way to promote the hiring of qualified veterans.

"Today's veterans are entitled to the same economic and employment opportunities as every Michigan citizen, but unfortunately some veterans return from active duty only to find they have lost their job," said Granholm. "Through their military experience and training, these veterans are ready to offer Michigan employers a wide range of business, technical, and leadership skills."

The Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth (DELEG) works with all Michigan Works! Agencies and a dedicated network of service providers to help veterans find jobs. The Veterans' Services Division, part of DELEG's Bureau of Workforce Transformation, sends a "welcome home" letter to every returning Michigan military veteran and reservist, offering reintegration services to make the return to civilian life as smooth and productive as possible for themselves and their families. Michigan is home to more than 750,000 veterans who have been honorably discharged. Each month, more than 500 Michigan military personnel are separated from active service and join the ranks of veterans.

As part of their military service, veterans have received a high level of training in their field. They possess a high level of discipline and have transferable job skills and actual work experience needed by employers in such areas as information technology, telecommunications, management, skilled trades, health care, and others.

"We are committed to bringing together highly qualified veterans and employers by using our broad range of workforce programs and services, including the No Worker Left Behind Initiative, Transition Assistance Program, Green Jobs Program, Michigan Works! Agencies and state veterans representatives," said Andrew S. Levin, Chief Workforce Officer of Michigan and Deputy Director of DELEG. "Employers can contact DELEG's veterans employment specialists, who will help them find the perfect candidates and review incentives, such as tax credits that may be available, or register for a veterans job fair."

Veterans interested in more information on job assistance can call (800) 455-5228 and speak to a veterans resource specialist, or visit www.michigan.gov/veteranjobs.

In addition, dates and locations for veteran-focused job fairs are posted at http://www.michigan.gov/veteranjobs. The site also lists Transition Assistance Program (TAP) sessions for veterans, reservists, and their spouses to help them find employment in the state.

The Michigan Legislature has partnered with DELEG and the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) to produce a Michigan Veterans Benefits & Services Guide to Federal, State, and Local Programs, which is available online at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dmva/VBS-Booklet_Instructions_190078_7.pdf. These free guides are also available through any member of the Michigan Legislature.
