Alphabetical Listing of MIOSHA Consultation Education and Training Division Construction and General Industry Safety and Health Course Descriptions Asbestos Awareness Construction trades routinely renovate and demolish buildings that were built prior to 1981. These construction activities often result in contact with asbestos-containing materials. General Industries are also subject to Asbestos rules and regulations. Asbestos Awareness Training is required annually for employees whose work activities may contact asbestos-containing materials (ACM) or presumed asbestos-containing materials (PACM), but do not disturb ACM or PACM during their work activities. Lead is found both in industry and in construction, and poses a threat to all who come into contact with it. This combined training consists of information regarding Asbestos and Lead and their various forms and uses. Blueprint for a Safety and Health Management System The attendee will learn that a direct relationship exists between effective management and lower workplace injury and illness rates. This class uses continuous improvement tools and methodology to effect increased worker protection, lower costs, enhanced productivity and improved employee morale. Attendees will learn that a high level of employee involvement leads to continuous improvement of the Safety and Health Management System. Electricity: The Invisible Killer Electrocutions are one of the leading causes of fatalities in construction nationally. In Michigan (2003) they were the number one cause of construction fatalities. This program will explain and illustrate safety practices the electrical industry itself uses before performing work on energized overhead lines. Emphasized will be the importance of recognizing and eliminating hazards to avoid the possibility of any contact with energized circuits. Covered in the program: standards that apply to energized line clearances; what constitutes fatal amount of current; how to determine voltages and when overhead lines need to be de-energized. Using the NIOSH Ergonomic Primer as a guide, participants will be able to look for signs of cumulative trauma, develop in-house expertise, gather evidence of ergonomic problems, identify controls and implement a proactive ergonomic program. Examples of potential problem jobs are discussed and corrective recommendations are reviewed. Focus is on the implementation of engineering controls, including material handling, hand tools and workstations. Using ergonomic risk analysis as a tool to identify the tasks and subtasks of a job is emphasized. Ergonomic awards offered by the MIOSHA program will be explained. Excavations, Trenching, and Shoring. In addition, the electrical hazards and applicable regulations associated will be discussed. It is also designed to assist participants in identifying hazards at their workplace, especially those associated with mobile equipment. This will be followed by a question and answer session. Health Issues in Construction This course will help educate and make the construction manager/worker aware of some of the typical health hazards and their potential health effects that are associated with the construction trade industry. This workshop is designed to give the student an overview of health issues that may be encountered in the construction industry. Topics covered include lead, silica, cadmium, chromium (VI), noise, isocyanates and asbestos.Students will be able to recognize potential problems with exposures and how to protect themselves with the use of engineering controls and personal protective equipment. Industrial Laser Safety Currently no MIOSHA standards exist regulating industrial laser use besides the duty of employers to protect their employees from the possibility of injury or illness. This class is designed to provide Michigan employers with a basic understanding of the requirements they will need to meet in order to protect their employees and eliminate laser safety and health hazards. This class will review the safety and health hazards commonly associated with industrial laser applications and usage, classifications, nominal hazard zones, laser officer responsibilities, training and guarding, MIOSHA compliance requirements and other applicable consensus standards. Lockout (Control of Energy Source) and Machine Guarding This one day seminar covers the requirements of General Industry Safety Standard Part 85, Control of Hazardous Energy Sources, and machine guarding requirements. Topics include the recognition of energy sources, creation of written programs, employee training, annual inspections and normal production operation exemptions. Employee protection through the use and application of machine guards and devices as required by various MIOSHA standards is covered in detail. MIOSHA Construction 10-Hour Course This ten-hour program presents an overview of MIOSHA regulations for the construction industry. Detailed information is presented to enable the participant to develop an accident prevention plan as required by Rule 114 of MIOSHA Construction Safety Standard Part 1, General Rules. An overview of MIOSHA inspection procedures is presented, as well as the most frequently cited MIOSHA violations in the construction industry. Participants gain detailed information regarding construction and health standards relative to the industry. MIOSHA Construction - Part 45 Fall Protection Attendees at this training will review the MIOSHA Part 45, Construction Safety Standard for Fall Protection including the latest OSHA and MIOSHA interpretations. Examination of recent fatal falls in construction and discussion of the latest fall protection techniques for construction will also be covered. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions. This class will also cover fall exposures for residential construction and MIOSHA fall protection criteria. In addition, there will be an explanation of the MIOSHA agency instruction for residential construction, a video on residential fall protection, and detailed instructions for builders, followed by a question and answer period. MIOSHA General Industry 10-Hour + (Fundamentals of Safety & Health) Many employers are faced with the need to appoint an employee to oversee their program who may not be fully prepared for the challenge. This fundamentals course offers in three days the basics of creating safety and health management system as well as providing an introduction to the MIOSHA Act and standards. Topics including inspections and citations, elements of a comprehensive safety and health system, recordkeeping, accident investigations, written programs, introduction to industrial hygiene, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, bloodborne infectious disease (BID), eye wash requirements, hazard recognition, machine guarding, and ergonomics. MIOSHA Recordkeeping and Cost of Injuries This MIOSHA program is designed to help employers ensure that their organization complies with MIOSHA recordkeeping requirements as contained in MIOSHA Administrative Rules Part 11, Recording and Reporting of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses. In addition to learning and understanding the “recordability” of work related injuries and illnesses, attendees will actively participate in a group exercise to complete the OSHA 300 log, 301, and 300A forms. Using this data, participants calculate injury and illness rates and learn how to compare these rates to other companies with their Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) or the new North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). Occupational Noise Exposure This seminar is designed to give participants an understanding of the requirements of MIOSHA’s, Part 380. Occupational Noise Exposure. Topics covered include: hearing loss and how it can occur, determining when a Standard Threshold Shift (STS) occurs and when to record it on the 300 log, noise training requirements, noise control technologies and how to select proper hearing protection. Participants will have “hands-on” opportunities to use noise dosimeters/sound level meters and calibrators and assess noise levels associated with actual noise sources. Powered Industrial Truck Train-the-Trainer This MIOSHA program involves a full day of safety training designed to address specific occupational safety and health hazards associated with operating powered industrial trucks. MIOSHA General Industry Safety Standard Part 21, Powered Industrial Trucks, is extensively examined as well as relevant rules contained in other MIOSHA Standards. Topics include truck safe guards and devices, safe operating procedures, employee selection, training and inspections.
