| Guiding Principles for Consolidating Department Managed Lands |
- Disposal methods will include the following, in order of priority:
- Protection of the public’s interest in the land via conveyance to other governmental entity, preferably by exchange.
- Conveyance to non-profit conservation manager, preferably by exchange.
- Conveyance to private entities, preferably by exchange.
- Proceeds from sales of parcels will be used to acquire lands with greater resource or recreational value.
- Conveyances by exchange will be conducted to:
- Block in project areas for efficient management and natural resource protection.
- Provide for strategic replacement of lands with those of greater resource or recreational value.
- Where appropriate based on parcel attributes, preference will be given to conveying designated parcels to “alternate conservation owners” to manage lands for conservation purposes. These “alternate conservation owners” include land conservation organizations, and to an extent, other organizations whose mission is land conservation or providing public outdoor recreation.
- Where determined by the Department to be warranted, conveyances will include deed restrictions to ensure the conveyance will:
- Protect the natural resource values.
- Maintain public hunting, fishing, and trapping opportunities.
- Maintain public recreation opportunities or cultural resources on the parcel.
