This low evergreen shrub occurs in several habitats throughout Michigan, including the dunes of all of our shores. The trailing stems have a papery, shreddy bark, and bear oval, dark green, leathery leaves about one inch long. The tiny bell shaped flowers, which are often white with pinkish tips, arise in terminal clusters, producing dull reddish berries that, although edible, are rather tasteless.
