Point counts of birds will be conducted in many of the priority sampling blocks in the state. The data gathered from these point counts will be used to generate estimates of relative abundance of the species breeding in Michigan. Point counts require a high level of bird identification skill, using both sight and sound, and specialized instruction in the point count procedure is required before a volunteer can begin collecting data. Please contact your regional coordinator or the KNC Research Office if you are interested in performing point counts.
Maps and GPS data are available to those performing point counts. Simply click on a county to view available data. Both the maps and GPX files can be used to help you locate the survey points in your block(s).
NOTE: It is recommended you save maps and GPX files directly to your computer. To do this, right click on the file you would like to save and select "Save Target As...". Navigate to the appropriate folder in the 'Save As' window, then click "Save" (you can change the filename if you wish.) The GPX file should now appear in the directory you specified.
