New Camper Cabin Now Available at Waterloo Recreation Area

Contact:  Gary Jones 734-475-8307
Agency: Natural Resources

July 2, 2008

Department of Natural Resources state parks and recreation officials today announced camping opportunities at Waterloo Recreation Area now include a new camper cabin.

"The camper cabin is perfect for families who want to 'Go-Get Outdoors' but don't want to invest in a lot of camping equipment," said Gary Jones, park manager. "We're excited to offer this new lodging opportunity. Campers have access to all the modern features of the Portage Lake Campground, including a great view of the lake. The cabin sits in an ideal location."

The 400-square-foot, two-bedroom cabin sleeps up to six people with a set of bunk beds and a double bed in their own rooms, and a futon in the main living area. The front deck is the ideal place to park a comfortable lawn chair and enjoy the scenery. The cabin offers electrical outlets, shelves for food and supplies, a refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot. The site also offers a picnic table, fire ring and charcoal grill. Campers must supply their own bedding, dishes and cookware. Showers and bathroom facilities are within walking distance.

In addition to the cabin at Waterloo, camper cabins have been built at Lakeport, Mitchell, Interlochen, and Port Crescent state parks, and the Pinckney Recreation Area. More cabins are planned for Holland and Orchard Beach state parks. The cabins, which are built for less than $10,000, are a partnership between the DNR and the Department of Corrections' Prison Build Program. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund has provided funding to build these camper cabins in state parks and recreation areas across the state.

The Waterloo Recreation Area cabin rental fee is $80 per night during the summer camping season. For additional information, contact the park at (734) 475-8307. Camping reservations can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling 800-44-PARKS.

Waterloo Recreation Area, Portage Lake Campground, is located on Seymour Road, two miles west of Mt. Hope Road (exit 150 off I-94), near Waterloo.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
