Regional
Statewide
The PRC Unit is the smallest (105,049 acres) of the 15 Units in the State Forest System, however it has the most contiguous state land ownership.
The PRC Unit provides forest products; has many land recreational opportunities and is in the heart of Michigan's elk range.
The Unit has 6 campgrounds, one horse trail campground and a group horse camp. Hiking and riding trails are maintained in the Unit. Bicycle riders and cross country skiers are welcome to use the trails. It is a place to hunt, fish, camp, hike, cross country ski, snowshoe, ride a horse or just take a drive.
The unit is home to a wide variety of wildlife ranging from elk to songbirds.
Three rivers flow through the PRC Unit: the Pigeon, Black and Sturgeon Rivers. The Pigeon River is a designated Natural River.

Pigeon River Plan
The Pigeon River is located in the north-central part of the southern peninsula of Michigan. Its headwaters are located a few miles northeast of Gaylord. The river then flows in a northerly direction to its mouth at Mullet Lake, a distance of 42 miles. The Pigeon River system drains a surface area of approximately 88,000 acres and include 80 linear miles of stream.

Importance:
The Pigeon River Pine area is exemplary because of the over 100 acres of white pine (most
about 100 years old). The Grindstone Creek area encompasses a northern hardwood forest
with many large trees, including some old growth beech and maple trees remaining from the
original forest. It also contains four acres of cedar swamp and a portion of the
Grindstone Creek headwaters. The Dog Lake area is considered to be one of the most remote
and wild areas in the region. Nesting loons, bald eagles, and osprey are a few of the many
animals using the lake. |

Compartment Review Packets
All State Forest Compartment Review maps and documents are drafts to
be used for general planning purposes. Links to these documents will be removed after the review occurs.
Planning is occurring in compartments within this unit, view current compartment locations by clicking Pigeon River's Locator Map.
NOTE: We are using maps with imagery as a backdrop. These maps are excellent at showing the features of the land - but they make very large files that are slow to download on some computers.
The Pigeon River Forest Management Unit has 2010 YOE Review packets available for the following compartments. The packets were posted 06/27/2008, unless noted otherwise:
