Girl Scout Conservation Stewardship Requirements

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has shared a long history of conservation stewardship with scouting organizations. Scouts have participated and completed a number of service projects or eagle projects on lands managed by the department. In honor of this commitment to conservation stewardship, and in recognition of the service provided, the DNR - in partnership with the Michigan Boy Scout and Girl Scout Councils - has initiated a Conservation Stewardship Award that scouts can earn.

Depending on the scouting level and program, both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can earn earning awards, badges, pins, try-its, etc. while helping conserve Michigan's natural resources by participating in stewardship activities on state lands. The scouting levels and requirements to earn a stewardship patch or medal and pins are listed below.

Girl Scout Requirements (Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors)
Stewardship Medal

  1. Earn the Eco-Action IPP
  2. Perform 4 hours of stewardship service sponsored by the Michigan DNR

Wildlife Pin

  1. Earn one of the following IPPs: 
    1. Wildlife
    2. All About Birds
  2. Perform an additional 4 hours of stewardship service sponsored by the Michigan DNR.

Fish Pin

  1. Earn the From Shore to Sea IPP
    1. Completion should include the following items:
      1. Skill Builder-1 & 3 or 6
      2. Technology- any (relate to Great Lakes)
      3. Service Projects- any (relate to Michigan waters)
      4. Career Exploration-any (relate to Michigan waters)
  2. Perform an additional 4 hours of stewardship service sponsored by the Michigan DNR.

Parks pin

  1. Earn one of the following IPPs: 
    1. Backpacking
    2. Camping
  2. Perform an additional 4 hours of stewardship service sponsored by the Michigan DNR Recreation Division.

Forest Pin

  1. Earn one of the following IPPs: 
    1. Plant Life
    2. Trees and Forests (Council's Own Award: see example)
  2. Perform an additional 4 hours of stewardship service sponsored by the Michigan DNR.

Junior Requirements
Stewardship Patch

  1. Earn the Eco-Action badge
  2. Earn two of the following patches:
    1. Earth Connections (1-10)
    2. Outdoor Activities (1-10)
    3. Outdoors in the City (1-10)
    4. Plants and Animals (1-10)
    5. Wildlife (1-10)
    6. Your Outdoor Surroundings (1-10)
    7.  Rocks Rock (1-10)
    8. Water Wonders (1-10)
  3. Perform at least 2 hours of volunteer stewardship service sponsored by the Michigan DNR.

Brownie Requirements
Stewardship Patch

  1. Earn the Eco-Explorer Try-it
  2. Earn two of the following:
    1. Earth and Sky (3, 5, & 6)
    2. Earth is Our Home (2, 3, 5, or 6)
    3. Outdoor Adventurer (2, 3, & 5)
    4. Plants (1, 2 & 4)
    5. Watching Wildlife (1-6, any three)
    6. Water Everywhere (1-6, any three)
  3. Perform at least 2 hours of volunteer stewardship service sponsored by the Michigan DNR.
