Lyme disease is an illness caused by a spirochete bacterium (Borrelia burgdorferi). This disease is transmitted to people and animals primarily by the bite of the tick, Ixodes scapularis.

Lyme disease has now been reported from 43 states, including Michigan.

• Treatment and Prevention
Prompt diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics can cure the infection and prevent later complications in both humans and domestic animals.

• The vector: Black-legged ticks.
Black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) are responsible for transmitting Lyme disease bacteria to humans in the northeastern and north-central United States.

• Transmission and Development
The tick, Ixodes scapularis, is the most common carrier of Lyme disease in the mid-west and eastern states.
