Governor Granholm Makes Appointments to State Community Corrections Board

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm announced the following recent appointments to the State Community Corrections Board.

Louis Dean of Grand Rapids, executive director for Alternative Directions, a community-based probation residential service offering rehabilitative and restorative sanctions for non-violent offenders in Kent County, appointed to represent an existing community alternatives program for a term expiring March 29, 2008. He succeeds John Wynbeek whose term has expired.

Carl W. Solden of Waterford, township supervisor of Waterford, appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring March 29, 2008. He succeeds Mary Kay Scullion whose term has expired.

George Zulakis of Okemos, shareholder and managing attorney for Baird & Zulakis, P.C., appointed to represent criminal defense attorneys for a term expiring March 29, 2008. He succeeds Lawrence Emery whose term has expired.

John W. Phillips of Wayne, director of public safety for Pittsfield Township, reappointed to represent chiefs of city police departments for a term expiring March 29, 2008.

Charles L. Brown of Frankenmuth and Inez M. Brown of Flint were previously appointed to serve on the board. Charles Brown, Saginaw County Sheriff, was appointed to represent county sheriffs for a term expiring March 29, 2007. He succeeded Thomas N. Edmonds. Inez Brown, city clerk for the City of Flint, was appointed to represent city government for a term expiring March 29, 2005. She succeeded Roger Kahn.

The board advises the Director of Corrections in developing goals, criteria, and guidelines for local governments in establishing community corrections programs. It also determines grant guidelines for comprehensive corrections plans which are intended to provide safe, cost-effective alternatives to incarceration.

These appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
