Whereas, Since 1989, the unions of the AFL-CIO and the UAW have observed Workers
Memorial Day as a remembrance of those who have died while on the job; and,
Whereas, Workplace catastrophes, exposure to toxic substances and unsafe working
conditions have resulted in the suffering, injury and death of tens of thousands
of American workers each year; and,
Whereas, Nearly 100 countries celebrate Workers Memorial Day and the International
Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), the International Labour Organization,
Canada, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan and Thailand formally recognize April 28 as
Workers Memorial Day; and,
Whereas, This observance renews our efforts to seek stronger health and safety
protections, higher standards and better enforcement of these standards and
fair and just compensation; and now therefore be it
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim April 28, 2003, as Workers Memorial Day in Michigan, and
ask all of Michigan to remember those workers who have been killed, injured
or disabled on the job.
