Osteopathic Medicine Month

Whereas, There are currently more than 53,000 Osteopathic Physicians (D.O.’s) in the United States; and,

Whereas, Since the founding of osteopathic medicine in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., D.O., D.O.’s have made tremendous accomplishments to the American health care system; and,

Whereas, D.O.’s have treated U.S. Presidents, Olympic athletes, contributed to the fight against AIDS, served on nationwide health panels, and fought for civil rights; and,

Whereas, D.O.’s believe that a person’s lifestyle (including their home, work and social environments) can play a significant role in the health of that individual; and,

Whereas, D.O.’s practice OMT, which is a hands-on, whole body approach to diagnose health problems, treat dysfunctions, preserve good health, and prevent the spread of disease; and,

Whereas, Michigan’s 4,526 Osteopathic Physicians are dedicated to improving the health of their communities through education and awareness-based efforts, as well as by delivering quality health services; and,

Whereas, the citizens of Michigan recognize the need for Osteopathic Physicians who are committed to bringing attention to improving the health of American citizens, regardless of age, income level or ethnicity; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September, 2004, as Osteopathic Medicine Month in Michigan and I encourage all citizens to recognize the benefits an Osteopathic Physician can provide to the medical community.
