Whereas, Michigan’s youth make considerable contributions to the welfare
of every community throughout the state of Michigan every day of the year; and,
Whereas, By teaching students early about the role they can play in their community,
the majority of young people who volunteer will continue to do so throughout
their lifetime; and,
Whereas, Service-learning uses a teaching method that combines service to the
community with classroom curriculum and is more than merely community service,
it is a hands-on approach to mastering subject material while fostering civic
responsibility; and,
Whereas, By relating academic activities to real-life experiences, service-learning
improves workplace skills and enhances persona development among youth; and,
Whereas, The state of Michigan considers its youth a vital community asset;
and,
Whereas, National Youth Service Day is a public awareness and education campaign
that highlights the contributions that young people make to their communities;
and now therefore be it,
Resolved, that I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim April 16, 2004 through April 18, 2004 as Youth Service Days
in the state of Michigan.
