Arbor Week and Day

Whereas, Trees play a significant role in our environment and in the quality of our lives by providing shelter and nourishment to all living things as well as bringing beauty to our surroundings; and,

Whereas, Maintaining our heritage of beautiful woodland and preventing the shrinking of our forests is an important mission of the State of Michigan; and,

Whereas, Trees are magical jungle gyms to our children, with branches reaching to the sky, and in addition the practical use of trees help us build our homes, cool us with their shade, and create everything from furniture to paper products; and,

Whereas, In Michigan, we are fortunate to have a rich variety of trees that present us with the glorious gift of color each autumn, reds and oranges that remind us of the cycle of life that we are all a part of; and,

Whereas, The threat to our ecosystem must be fought against with the planting of new trees to allow future generations with the blessing of trees throughout their lifetimes; and now therefore be it

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of April 24, 2005, as Arbor Week and April 29, 2005, as Arbor Day in Michigan.
