Whereas, Teen dating violence is a reality for many teenagers and an issue that many parents are unaware of; and,
Whereas, 1 in 3 teenagers is affected by dating violence; and,
Whereas, Dating violence can be physical, sexual, or verbal and nearly 1 in 5 teenagers in a serious relationship has reported being slapped, pushed, hit, threatened or coerced by a partner; and,
Whereas, The State of Michigan recognizes the dangers of dating violence and provides legal protection for its victims; and,
Whereas, Elimination of teen dating violence must be achieved through cooperation of individuals, organizations, and communities; and,
Whereas, Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to learn more about preventing teen dating violence and to show support for the numerous organizations and individuals who provide critical advocacy, services and assistance to victims; and,
Whereas, The Michigan Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Human Services has created a Dating Violence Youth Education Package to increase awareness among educators and Michigan teenagers; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of February 5, 2007, as Teen Dating Awareness Week in Michigan.
