Youth Employment Month

Whereas, The Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth Office of Labor Market Information   & Strategic Initiatives projects that 314,800 of Michigan's 16-19 year olds will be seeking summer jobs in 2007; and,

Whereas, In order for our young people to find work, preparation must begin now to provide valuable summer work experiences, whether it be their first job, a job  to help pay for college expenses in the fall, or a position to gain valuable work experience and skills; and,

Whereas, Every summer, communities face the task of providing meaningful employment opportunities for out-of-school youth, whether they will be returning to school in the fall or moving permanently into the work force; and,

Whereas, The contributions of local businesses, educational institutions, government and community groups are essential to the process of promoting and developing productive summer opportunities for youth; and,

Whereas, Michigan employers should recognize that hiring young people, even temporarily, is an investment in the future of the State of Michigan and the nation, and that such work experiences help reinforce the skills and values taught in our homes and schools; and,

Whereas, The Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth can provide information to businesses, schools and parents with information about legally and safely employing minors; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 2007, as Youth Employment Month in Michigan, and I encourage employers to offer meaningful, safe and valuable work and volunteer opportunities for our young people.
