Juvenile Diabetes Awareness Week

Whereas, Juvenile or type 1 diabetes is one of the leading chronic diseases in children and adolescents, for which there is no cure; and,

 

Whereas, People with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food, must test their blood sugar up to four or more times a day, and then administer insulin through multiple, daily injections, or the use of a continuous infusion insulin pump; and,

 

Whereas, Each year more than 13,000 children in the U. S. are diagnosed with type 1diabetes; and,

 

Whereas, This chronic, debilitating disease affects every organ system in the body and usually strikes in childhood, adolescence or young adulthood, and lasts a lifetime; and,

 

Whereas, Diabetes kills one American every three minutes and is the sixth leading cause of death reported in the United States, and life expectancy for people with diabetes is shortened by an average of 7 - 10 years; and,

 

Whereas, Michigan youth will be among 150 children from throughout the country who will represent their state on Capitol Hill to remind Congress and the Administration of the critical need to find a cure for a disease they live with every day - type 1 (juvenile) diabetes; and now therefore be it,

 

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of June 17, 2007, as Juvenile Diabetes Awareness Week.
