Crime Stoppers Day

Whereas, Crime Stoppers of Michigan empowers citizens to keep their neighborhoods safe by publicizing unsolved crimes and wanted fugitives, providing an anonymous tip line, and furnishing rewards of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest; and,

Whereas, In 2006 Crime Stoppers of Michigan received more than 1,700 tips in   Southeast Michigan, resulting in the closing of 20 homicides cases; and,

Whereas, To encourage participation from those who otherwise would be reluctant to get involved because of fears of retaliation or reluctance to testify in courts, legislation was passed in Michigan in December 2006, to further support Crime Stopper's guarantee of anonymity to tipsters by protecting Crime Stoppers records from subpoena; and,

Whereas, In June, Crime Stoppers will launch the Speak Up Club, a brand new program that offers personal memberships to Crime Stoppers of Michigan and provides area residents additional peace of mind while further enhancing their safety by providing up-to-the minute alerts on crimes committed in their neighborhoods; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 21, 2007, as Crime Stoppers Day.  I thank Crime Stoppers of Michigan for their work to empower citizens to keep their communities safe while providing an avenue for the safe and anonymous reporting of information about serious crimes.
