RUO Rohrig saves baby

RUO Jennifer Rohrig

Nine years of departmental training, quick action and a cool head may have saved the life of a 20-month-old baby by Florence Crane Correctional Facility RUO Jennifer Rohrig.

On November 3, while on her way to town, RUO Rohrig came upon a roll over accident. She was the first person on the scene and as she approached the upside down vehicle, she found a hysterical woman standing outside of the car and the baby pinned on her side under the caved in roof. RUO Rohrig quickly assessed the scene and went to the child’s rescue. She supported the baby’s head while quietly talking and singing to the child to calm her and at the same

time she also consoled the mother until the fire department and EMTs arrived.

The fire department used the Jaws of Life to remove the baby from the vehicle and she was then airlifted from the scene. The baby has since been reported to be fine, sustaining superficial wounds.

RUO Rohrig was assisted by her 11-year-old daughter. Although she did as she was told and stayed back away from the scene, she took her own action by asking the bystanders if 911 had been called, calling her father, who was not far from the scene, and then retrieving the first aid kit from their own car, standing by with it, in case it was needed.
