Learning Disabilities Awareness Month

Whereas, Recent research finds that learning disabilities are associated with differences in neurological function; and,

Whereas, Learning disabilities are often invisible and may become apparent only in contexts where there are barriers to different ways of learning; and,

Whereas, People from all backgrounds, ethnicities, and social classes can have learning disabilities; and,

Whereas, Many children are at risk of not receiving a quality education unless their learning differences are observed early and appropriate actions are taken to allow full access to the general curriculum and full continuum of services; and,

Whereas, Persons with learning disabilities can benefit from a total approach to their educational, emotional, interpersonal and medical health needs; and,

Whereas, Learning environments that support the needs of persons with learning disabilities are those that recognize different strengths, employ principles of universal design in education, and where students learn to compensate for their learning differences and become effective self-advocates for their learning needs; and,

Whereas, When parents, students, educators, and community members work together they can support individuals with learning disabilities in attaining independent, self-determined, fulfilling and productive lives;

Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2009 Learning Disabilities Awareness Month in Michigan.  By observing this month, citizens of this state can help create awareness of the barriers that people with learning disabilities encounter and help to support those with learning disabilities.
