Whereas, Metastatic breast cancer is a Stage IV breast cancer that has spread from the original breast site to the bones and organs like the liver, lungs, and brain; and,
Whereas, One-third of those with breast cancer are often diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer; and,
Whereas, According to the American Cancer Society, over 178,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, and an estimated 30 percent developed State IV advanced or metastatic breast cancer; and,
Whereas, It is reported that approximately 250,000 Americans are presently living with metastatic breast cancer, however the immediate need for increased awareness of this devastating disease has yet to be meet; and,
Whereas, Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day was established to emphasizes the urgent need for new targeted breast cancer treatments that will provide a higher quality of life and life expectancy for those that are diagnosed;
Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 13, 2009, Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. I encourage all citizens to learn more about this disease, and to recognize the importance of creating awareness so that we may soon find a cure.
