Read Aloud Day

Whereas, Reading aloud to children is the single most important activity that parents and caregivers can engage in to ensure that children have a great start in life; and,

Whereas, Listening to literature read aloud is one of the most valuable and pleasurable experiences beginning readers and writers can have; and,

Whereas, Michigan's Project Great Start seeks to increase learning in the critical years from birth to age five by encouraging parents and caregivers to read aloud to children; and,

Whereas, WTVS Detroit Public Television is kicking off its PBS "Between the Lions" Read Aloud Book Club with reading events for children and families at all 22 Detroit Public Library branches and other venues within the State of Michigan; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 9, 2003, as Read Aloud Day throughout our State. I encourage all those who care about children to read aloud to a young person as often as possible and help them become successful readers and writers.
