Reading is key to learning and growth. For four years, Michigan History has provided an essential ingredient to reading through Michigan History for Kids. The magazine is well written, meaningful and filled with fun photos and illustrations that grab kids’ attention.

Michigan History for Kids magazine won a 2005 Parents’ Choice Recommended Award. An August 2005 survey of 7,000 Michigan teachers proved that Michigan History for Kids is an invaluable resource:

“I cannot tell you how wonderful these resources have been. They are well written and the kids love to read them. They give the kids real text experience and take them deeper into the subject matter on a Michigan topic.” Mary F., Linden

“I am a fourth grade teacher who loves the magazines you put out for us. I use them all the time in the classroom. They are easy to read and are an excellent supplement to the curriculum. My kids especially love it!” Michelle M., Holland

“I have used [your publications] to build lesson plans in math, reading, social studies and science that are based on the Michigan Standards and Benchmarks. Kudos to you for such useful and fun materials! My students and I have enjoyed every single issue.” Kimberly M., Columbiaville

Less than two percent of schools are able to provide Michigan History for Kids to their students. According to Michigan History's survey, 96 percent of schools that don’t subscribe say it is due to lack of funds.

Here is where Michigan History is asking for help. The magazine is looking for people, groups or businesses willing to sponsor a school in their community with a subscription to Michigan History for Kids. Each subscription provides local children with:

  • Material that makes reading fun
  • Something each child can take home and call his or her own
  • Knowledge that expands children’s horizons and builds loyalty to our state
  • Ideas for classroom activities that enhance the learning experience

The cost of a one-year classroom subscription to Michigan History for Kids is $180 (30 copies each of four issues). Michigan History will send the teacher a note to let him or her know who provided the generous gift.

This is a great opportunity to help our state's children read, learn and love Michigan. To participate, call (800) 366-3703 or download the order form at www.michiganhistorymagazine.com.

Michigan History is published by the Michigan Historical Center, an agency of the Department of History, Arts and Libraries.
