The Department of History, Arts and Libraries (HAL), created in 2001, works to enrich quality of life and strengthen the economy by providing access to information, preserving and promoting Michigan heritage, and fostering cultural creativity. The department includes:
Library of Michigan The state's official library since 1828, the Library of Michigan serves the public, government and libraries statewide with quality programs and collections including Michigan books and materials; MeL, Michigan's 24-hour virtual library; demographic and economic data; and one of the country's top genealogy collections.
Mackinac State Historic Parks The Mackinac area's colorful role in Michigan history comes to life for people of all ages through group tours, archaeology, teacher materials, re-enactments and one-of-a-kind educational and recreational experiences.
Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs The arts council administers millions of dollars in important match grants for Michigan's arts and culture community. The council works to promote and strengthen Michigan's arts and culture sector by providing comprehensive grant, fair and workshop information.
Michigan Historical Center The award-winning educational programs and publications of the Michigan Historical Center put history center-stage for hundreds of thousands children and adults every year. The center preserves and interprets Michigan's past, helping people enjoy and find inspiration in their collective heritage.
One of HAL's primary goals is to position Michigan as a national leader in cultural tourism by building awareness of our state's vast cultural resources. From the state level down to the local art fair, HAL encourages collaboration in both the public and private sectors to make cultural tourism a key element of every Michigan community.
Michigan is a treasure trove of historical, cultural and education gems. HAL's single focus is geared to connect the public to the many historic sites and collections of information, art, artifacts and literature available, especially those with a strong tie to Michigan. From century-old census records and e-books to symphonies, museums and historical re-enactments - history, arts and libraries abound in Michigan. We invite you to explore the HAL Web site and connect with your cultural side!
