The Kent County Sheriff Department is a progressive, technologically advanced agency devoted to providing protection for and service to the community.  The Sheriff Department is a leader in law enforcement and corrections programs.  It is a multi-faceted, modern police agency with specialized units.  Some of these units include vice and detective bureaus, D.A.R.E., School Resource, and traffic investigation.  The department's philosophy is one of community policing and it participates in programs that emphasize its service to the residents of Kent County. 

The successful applicants will work as part-time officers on a seasonal basis and be responsible for patrolling County parks.  They will prevent crimes, provide security and event management within the parks, enforce laws and traffic regulations, and provide assistance to the public. They will function as part of a highly motivated, team oriented group of police professionals. The salary for a Park Police Officer is $17.00 per hour.

In order to qualify to become a Kent County Park Police Officer, candidates are subject to detailed personal, work and criminal background investigations and drug testing. The successful applicant must be of sound character, demonstrate a responsible work history, be free of felony convictions and possess a good driving record.  

The Park Police Officer position requires the possession of Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certification or proof of certifiability; a satisfactory work record and personal history; and must possess and maintain an unrestricted valid Michigan Driver's License with a good driving record. Desired qualifications include either a Bachelor's or Associate's degree (or course work) in Criminal Justice or related area. Previous experience in law enforcement in either a reserve, part-time or full-time position helpful. Bilingual ability beneficial.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The primary role of the Police Sergeant is to help assure the Department of Public Safety continues to provide the necessary police services to the Delta College community to assure a safe and secure learning environment. This position is responsible for the supervision of Public Safety Officers, and Student Service Officers and functions as a police officer; performing evaluations of employees based on personal observation and appropriate records; scheduling and motivating subordinate staff; identifying, developing and implementing various training programs; investigating crimes, offenses and violations of College policy; crime prevention presentations; monitoring report status; and other assigned duties. This position is currently assigned to work the afternoon shift, but shift flexibility is a necessity.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Technology Skills
Associates degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent knowledge and skills
Excellent driving record and current, valid driver's license
M.C.O.L.E.S. licensed
No criminal history
One-three years of current work related experience
Ability to work a flexible work schedule including afternoons, weekends, and holidays
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to relate to individuals of diverse backgrounds and demonstrate the ability to appropriately manage situations confronting a police officer.

Essential Job Functions:  With or without accommodations, must meet all physical qualifications associated with a police officer position as listed:  Weight must be in proportion to height as determined by physical examination.  Uncorrected vision correctable to 20/20 vision in each eye by soft contact lenses, gas permeable lenses and/or extended wear lenses.  No greater than 20/40 vision in each eye correctable to 20/20 with glasses.  Must not be color blind.  Must have no prior felony convictions (includes expunged convictions).  Must have valid Michigan driver's license and satisfactory driving record at time of selection.  Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.

Must be capable of affecting an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints.  Must be able to climb over obstacles; ride a mountain bike; climb through openings; jump down from elevated surfaces; jump over obstacles, ditches and streams; and crawl in confined areas to pursue, search, investigate and/or rescue.  Job may also involve standing or sitting for long periods of time.  Requires the ability to communicate verbally and effectively by listening to people and by giving information, directions and commands in person and over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications, often under adverse conditions such as siren usage and high speed vehicle operation.  Must be capable of performing tasks which require lifting, carrying, or dragging people or heavy objects while performing arrest, rescue or general patrol functions.

Degree/Experience:  Must have successfully completed a State of Michigan approved police academy and be able to pass MCOLES certification requirements.  Must meet the requirements for a Deputy Sheriff established by the Sheriff of Ingham County.
