LANSING - The Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) today announced Gerald Wojtala, Food and Dairy Division Deputy Director, has been elected the 2008-2009 president of the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO).

Established in 1896, AFDO is an international, non-profit organization that fosters uniformity in the adoption and enforcement of food, drug, medical devices, cosmetics and product safety laws, as well as rules and regulations. AFDO interfaces with high-level regulatory officials, industry representatives, trade associations, and consumer organizations, resulting in a significant impact on regulations at the federal, state and local level.

“Jerry is a tremendous asset to MDA and I am thrilled he was selected for this honor,” said Don Koivisto, MDA Director. “His wealth of experience in food science, safety, and defense make him a valuable asset to the members of AFDO.”

Wojtala’s career with MDA began in April 1985. He currently manages the food protection programs in the State of Michigan as the Deputy Director of the Food and Dairy Division. Additionally, he has served the department in various capacities including Regional Supervisor, Food Scientist, and Acting Director of the Dairy Division.

Jerry holds a degree in microbiology from Eastern Michigan University and graduate work in food science at Wayne State University. Jerry and his wife, Kathleen, live in Brighton with their two daughters.
