The Select Michigan Program encourages retailers and consumers to purchase food grown and processed in Michigan.
Buying locally directly supports our farmers and agri-businesses, as well as our state's economy. In fact, if every Michigan household spent just $10 per week on Michigan-produced food, it would keep nearly $40 million each and every week working for you right here at home.
Successes
In its first year (2003), the Select Michigan program enabled businesses to keep or create nearly 700 jobs while overall sales increased by 10-20 percent. During the 2006-2007 promotional campaigns, sales increased up to 2000 percent depending on the product and retailer. Michigan apple and asparagus growers all saw significant sales increases and Michigan peach growers enjoyed a 15 percent price premium for Select Michigan branded peaches. Also, the majority of the growers again confirmed that participation in the program gave them more secure markets. Consumers continue to prefer to buy local and participating retailers have increased their offerings of Michigan grown products.
