General Animal Feed Information

If you have reason to believe that a livestock or companion animal problem may be feed related, or that illegal practices relating to feed may have taken place, you are encouraged to contact any MDA regional office to file a complaint.

• Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)
A Federal rule that prohibits feeding protein derived from the tissues of animals to ruminant animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, deer, elk, bison, and buffalo became effective on August 4, 1997.

• Enforcement
MDA works to elicit compliance through an educational approach. When this approach is not sufficient other enforcement measures become necessary. A graduated approach to enforcement is employed as outlined here.

MDA staff inspect, sample, and analyze commercial feed to determine whether that commercial feed is in compliance with the Commercial Feed Law and the rules promulgated under the act

If a feed manufacturer adds antibiotics or other drugs to any of the feeds it produces, whether for the treatment or prevention of disease, or as an aid in promoting animal growth or feed efficiency, MDA periodically conducts a special type of inspection at their facility.

• Voluntary Recall of Premium Edge Cat Food
Voluntary recall of certain cat foods manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods for Premium Edge. The affected brands were found to contain an inadequate level of thiamine, which may cause clinical signs of thiamine deficiency in cats eating this food.

• Recall: Wysong Dry Extruded Dog Foods
Mold has been found in some bags of Wysong dry extruded dog foods manufactured in June and July of 2009.

• Voluntary Recall of Nutro Products Natural Choice Complete Care Dry Cat Foods
The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.

• Salmonella - Peanut Butter Contamination
This list includes pet food subject to recall in the United States since January 2009 related to peanut products recalled by Peanut Corporation of America. This list is updated by the Food and Drug Administration as new information is received.
