The Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) protects the health of domestic animals, livestock and pets through its licensing and inspection programs. By overseeing the health and safety of Michigan's animals, MDA is able to help control illnesses that could affect humans.

MDA routinely inspects:

• Livestock dealers and saleyards
• Rendering plants
• Animal feed establishments
• Animal shelters
• Dog pounds
• Pet shops
• Riding stables
• Research facilities

Michigan's veterinarians are responsible for overall livestock and poultry reportable disease programs and toxic substance contamination situations relating to animal health. They also conduct investigations into reports of other diseases such as rabies, pseudorabies, eastern equine encephalitis, equine infectious anemia, tuberculosis, psittacosis and various toxicities.
