The Work Opportunity Tax Credit UPDATE
The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is available to private for-profit employers who hire from specific targeted groups of people that have in the past experienced difficulty in securing employment.
Under The
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
of 2009, there is a new group of veterans included in the WOTC. For a limited time period (January 2009 through December 2010), companies can take a maximum credit of $2400 per veteran who meets the criteria. The veteran must have been released from active duty in the past 5 years before the hiring date AND must have received unemployment compensation for at least 4 weeks in the past year before the hiring date. This is not limited to veterans with a service-connected disability and is retroactive to apply to individuals who began work for the employer after December 31, 2008.
