DEPARTMENT HOSTED STATEWIDE LONG-TERM CARE CONFERENCE, MARCH 23RD AND 24TH AT THE DETROIT HILTON IN TROY

 

The MDCH Office of Long-Term Care Supports and Services hosted the first Michigan Long-Term Care Conference. The conference drew more than 500 participants including consumers, advocates, and professionals from across the state.

The plenary speakers were nationally-known for their expertise in long-term care issues.  Plenary speakers included:

The cracker barrell sessions provided opportunities for informal discussions with experts in the field.  This link to cracker barrel sessions is available for your reference.   We thank the following speakers for generously providing their time for these informative group discussions: 

  • Sally Burton-Hoyle, Ed.D., Director, Autism Society of Michigan, initiated a discussion on the challenges of implementing person-centered planning, such as including individuals with cognitive limitations or supporting individuals with no experience in the service system.
  • Susan C. Reinhard, Ph.D, RN, Co-Director, Rutgers Center for State Health Policy, who, with Charles Reed, discussed the key factors in other state's LTC reform initiatives and lessons learned by studies conducted at the Center for State Health Policy.
  • Andrew Farmer, Associate State Director, Health Supportive Services, Michigan AARP Office and Scott Heinzman, ADAPT Michigan shared ideas for influencing the direction of LTC in Michigan and the community. They also discussed how advocates for elder and disability issues are working together to support choice, rebalancing and other key initiatives.
  • Robert B. Friedland, Ph.D., Center on an Aging Society, Health Policy Institute, Georgetown University and Robert L. Mollica, Ed.D., Senior Program Director, National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) provided a follow up on issues raised in Dr. Friedland's plenary session to better understand the factors contributing to the LTC challenge.

Round tables were provided are a chance for informal one-on-one or small group discussions hosted by a facilitator.  These were offered during breakfast on Friday, March 24th.  Topics included:
