MDCH Announces Launch Of Michigan Volunteer Registry

Contact:  T.J. Bucholz (517) 241-2112
Agency: Community Health

January 24, 2006

MDCH’s Office of Public Health Preparedness (OPHP) today launched the MI Volunteer Registry, an Internet-based system enabling health care personnel and citizens to pre-register and volunteer to provide assistance during an emergency.

To meet the immense demands of large-scale emergencies, hospitals and other health care providers depend on volunteers. The MI Volunteer Registry allows for the registration and organization of those Michigan citizens interested in assisting during an emergency.

“The MI Volunteer Registry is another proactive step in preparing for accidental, natural, or intentional public health emergencies,” said Janet Olszewski, MDCH Director. “It will form a critical network to facilitate the deployment of willing, needed, and qualified volunteers for any emergency.”

The registry assembles volunteers based on the verification of their identity, credentials, and qualifications.

“This is a grass roots initiative that will potentially expand nationwide,” Olszewski said. “The registry will expedite response efforts for emergencies affecting the health and wellness of citizens.”

Those interested in volunteering can securely enter their contact information on the web site. During an emergency, volunteer information will be gathered and appropriate volunteers contacted by e-mail or text-pager. The web site also provides general information regarding specific events, exercises and drills, general knowledge, and training.

Doctors, nurses, behavioral health, emergency medical services personnel, ancillary support staff and all other individuals interested in assisting are encouraged to register.

For more information and to register, please visit www.mivolunteerregistry.org.
