The Michigan Office and Commission on Services to the Aging has named Alma's Tiffany Dewald, an employee for Consumers Energy, "Gatekeeper of the Year." While working for Consumers Energy as a customer service representative in the company's virtual call center, Dewald received a call from a customer who had concerns about a shut-off notice she had received. While talking to her, Dewald learned that the customer was physically unable to move around because of a recent fall. The customer also could not afford to see a doctor or eat properly.

Because of her concern for the customer's safety and well being, Dewald put her in contact with the Valley Area Agency on Aging for assistance. The agency contacted the Salvation Army to pay the utility bill and the Michigan Department of Human Services to provide nutrition assistance.

"Ms. Dewald's concern and efforts on behalf of an older adult in need are extraordinary," said Sharon Gire, director of the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging (OSA). "The Gatekeeper Program shows the potential in all of us to look after our older neighbors."

Consumers Energy started the Gatekeeper Program in 1987 to identify older members of the community who need assistance. Consumers Energy employees are nominated for their efforts to identify and assist at-risk elder customers age 60 and older. From those nominated, the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging selects one employee each month to be named "Gatekeeper of the Month." "Gatekeeper of the Year" is chosen from the pool of winners of the month awards.

As "Gatekeeper of the Year," Dewald has been honored with a plaque and a congratulatory letter from Governor Jennifer M. Granholm.
