Encapsulants are coatings which are usually sprayed or rolled onto surfaces, and are formulated to chemically bond with the underlying lead-containing coating.  This makes a long-lasting barriers between the lead and human contact.

Conventional paints are not encapsulants!

Michigan's lead remediation regulations allow encapsulants to be applied by a certified abatement company during lead hazard control projects. Home owners and rental property owners may also apply encapsulants during remodeling, renovating and painting projects. Manufacturers' recommendations must be followed for application and appropriate uses.

The following list contains encapsulant products that have been approved for use in Michigan for lead abatement projects and to make painted surfaces safer for young children.

NOTE: The State of Michigan does not conduct testing on encapsulant products, but approves materials based on compliance with ASTM standards and testing by competent national and regional laboratories.
