Professional certification
Any individual performing lead-based paint activities in the State of Michigan must be certified by the Department of Community Health, Healthy Homes Section (HHS). After completing an approved training course, a person wishing to be certified must submit a Lead Professional Certification application to HHS. The applicant must then pass the State certification (3rd party) exam. Certifications are valid for three years, with no additional training or testing during that period. An annual certification fee is required to be paid, however, no later than March 31st of each year to keep the certiication up-to-date.

Lead Abatement Contractor certification
Individuals who are certified as lead abatement Workers or Supervisors may not work on lead abatement projects independently. They must be employed by a certified Lead Abatement Contractor. In order to perform lead abatement work in the State of Michigan, a company must be certified by the Lead and Healthy Homes Section. There are three requirements for certification:
(1) Fill out and submit a Contractor Certification application, along with the appropriate fees.
(2) Submit proof of Workers' Compensation Insurance, or exclusion.
(3) Employ only certified lead abatement Workers or Supervisors on all abatement projects.
No additional training or testing is required. Contractor certifications expire on December 31st of each year.
