Transcript:
The Michigan Department of Community Health has an interest in working with the people who live in the Saginaw Bay Watershed to encourage them to eat fish because fish are part of a healthy diet. But we know that some fish contain chemical contamination. MDCH is trying to educate people about the fact that they should be eating fish because fish are really good for you. But we should be careful about eating certain types of fish that contain harmful chemicals that are found in our rivers and our lakes. - Sue Manente, Michigan Department of Community Health

Community Health hopes to get the kids interested in fishing the Saginaw River and in eating fish. But we want them to make safe choices because there is chemical pollution in the Saginaw River and in the carp and catfish that make those inedible. What we would like the kids to know is that they can fish the river, they should go after walleye and perch and they can eat those fish. And then if they catch catfish and carp from the River, throw them back! That's really the point of today, we want to get kids interested and excited about fishing. - Kory Groetsch, Michigan Department of Community Health

We started our summer day camp program on June 19. And we focus on academic enrichment, recreation, and social development during our recreation program. It runs Monday through Friday from 9-4pm. This particular event that we have today is called Fish Smart Eat Smart and it's focusing on safe fish consumption. We're here today to educate the children on safe fish consumption but also here for them to have a good time as well.

This is our second time that we've had the fish day in the park and we give thanks to the Michigan Department of Community Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and of course, First Ward Community Center. First Ward has been around since 1931 focusing on families and we're still doing that today, focusing on strengthening families. And we do that by providing family support services. And of course the social development component of that really put emphasis on youth. And so today we are using this opportunity to continue to give our youth some positive light, give them an opportunity to learn new ideas and explore and to just come out and have a great time. - Ms. Shielda Braddock, First Ward Community Center
