Birth, Death, Marriage and Divorce Records
The State of Michigan Vital Records Office is located at 201 Townsend Street, Capitol View Bldg, 3rd Floor, Lansing MI 48913 (across the street from the state capitol - south side). The office hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Mon-Fri, except for State holidays. We are open thru the lunch hour. If applying in person, you must submit your request by 3:00 pm in order to obtain same-day service.
The State of Michigan vital records office has records of births, deaths, and marriages that occurred in Michigan and were filed with the state as early as 1867, and divorce records as early as 1897. You can order a record online using a debit or credit card, print an application to order by mail or to change a record, or get information about our services. Click here if the birth or other vital event occurred in another state.
If you need general info about Michigan Vital Records, or need to have an application mailed to you, call our recorded message at 517-335-8656. If you need to speak with a customer service rep regarding a regular request, call 517-335-8666. If you need to speak with a customer service rep regarding a change or correction to a birth or death record, call the Changes Unit at 517-335-8660. You may also send a general e-mail to sopocyc@michigan.gov and we will try to respond within two business days.
Please note the Vital Records office will be closed for the following recognized state holidays:
February 18, 2008 - President's Day
May 26, 2008 - Memorial Day
July 4, 2008 - Fourth of July
September 1, 2008 - Labor Day
November 11, 2008 - Veteran's Day
November 27-28, 2008 - Thanksgiving Holidays
December 24-25, 2008 - Christmas Holidays
December 31, 2008 - New Year's Eve
January 1, 2009 - New Year's Day
