Alternative Steps to Getting Certification in Michigan

MDE is currently revising the criteria for alternate route programs, but some teacher preparation institutions offer expedited programs through the experimental programs options.  These programs may take approximately one year to complete. Institutions currently offering pilot programs are:

  • Central Michigan University
  • Wayne State University
  • Saginaw Valley State University
  • Grand Valley State University
  • Ferris State University
  • Oakland University

Those individuals who wish to obtain certification should contact one or more of these universities to determine if the program(s) they offer will meet their needs.

Steps to Driving a School Bus

Contact a local school district near you to inquire about possible school bus driver vacancies.

School districts within Michigan are in continual need of qualified individuals to serve as school bus drivers and substitute drivers.  Many times permanent positions are filled from the substitute school bus driver ranks.

It is important that potential candidates be dependable, self-reliant, but especially enjoys working with children of all ages.
