• Railroad Crossing Barricade Test Project (Denton Road/Wayne County)
Denton Road in Wayne County's Van Buren Township is the first location in the United States to be equipped with unique retractable barricades that serve as warning devices at a railroad crossing.

• Michigan Rail Loan Assistance Program (MiRLAP)
Please note that the Michigan Rail Loan Assistance Program (MiRLAP) program is not accepting applications in FY 2010.

• Local Grade Crossing Program
The Local Grade Crossing Program provides local governmental units and railroad companies with assistance for developing and implementing projects to enhance motorist safety at public highway-railroad grade crossings. Locations are selected using a statewide prioritization system which identifies crossings where safety enhancements will have the greatest benefit to the motoring public.

• Freight Economic Development Program
The Freight Services and Safety Division of the Michigan Department of Transportation offers financial assistance to transportation companies, private companies or local units of government in the development and/or expansion of business and industries.

• Rail Divestiture
Under legislation enacted in July 1998, MDOT was required to divest four defined rail segments. The objective is to return commercially viable rail operations to the private sector thus minimizing State involvement where it is not necessary to the State's transportation goals.
