Bridge replacement work on M-53 in Lapeer County to begin Wednesday, July 9

Contact:  Anita Richardson 989-754-0878, ext. 227
Agency: Transportation

July 8, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will complete a total bridge replacement project on M-53 (S. Van Dyke Road) over the Peters Drain in Lapeer County. This project, which includes paving, culvert, and approach work, begins Wednesday, July 9, and is expected to be completed by late August 2008. Work will progress in five construction stages.

Traffic will be maintained using temporary signals and/or flag control on the north and south ends of the bridge. Two lanes of traffic, one in each direction, will be maintained across the bridge for the duration of this project.

"Public safety is our major objective in planning this construction project," said Mike Hemmingsen, manager, MDOT Davison Transportation Service Center. "The effectiveness of the staging process and the goal of increased safety have weighed heavily in MDOT's decision making."

During the first stage of construction, traffic will be shifted and maintained on northbound lanes across the bridge. Work to temporarily widen southbound lanes will be completed in order to accommodate traffic, during stage two of the project.

During stage two of construction, crews will shift traffic back to southbound lanes. Bridge removal and replacement work will begin on the northbound lanes of M-53, including paving and approach work on the east half of the bridge.

In stage three, the northbound lanes will remain closed for shoulder and guardrail work on the east half of the bridge.

In stage four, traffic will be switched from southbound to northbound lanes of the project. Work on the southbound lanes, which includes paving and approach work, will be completed along with complete bridge removal and replacement on the west half of the bridge.

In the final stage, the southbound lanes will remain closed for shoulder and guardrail work on the west half of the bridge.

This $525,000 project will increase safety and improve ride quality for Michigan motorists.

For updates on this project, visit the list of statewide lane closures on the MDOT Web site at www.michigan.gov/laneclosures.
