Work started in August 2009 includes temporary widening of the roadway and construction of median crossovers, along with shoulder improvements and pavement repairs in preparation for maintaining traffic in 2010.
In April 2010, freeway reconstruction is expected to begin, including ramp work at the Okemos Road/I-96 interchange (Exit 110).
Four of the six ramps at the Okemos Road interchange will be reconstructed, along with traffic signal upgrades at the eastbound I-96 exit ramp.
During construction, the westbound off ramp at Okemos Road will have a temporary traffic signal to accommodate the different phases of construction. Once the work is complete, the signal will be removed.
In addition, the rest area located along westbound I-96, just east of Okemos Road, will be rebuilt, along with the parking lot. Work on the rest area is expected to start in July 2010 and will require a complete closure of the facility. This work is expected to be completed by May 2011.
All other work on I-96 is expected to be completed by November 2010.
For the work in 2009, there will be single-lane closures in each direction at night between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Shoulder closures are possible during the day, with a traffic shift along westbound I-96.
In 2010, construction will break down into stages to reduce the inconvenience to motorists.
Stage 1- Beginning in mid-April 2010, eastbound I-96 traffic will be shifted onto the westbound side of the freeway. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be separated by a concrete barrier with two lanes of traffic maintained in each direction.
During Stage 1, the eastbound roadway and eastbound Okemos Road exit and entrance ramps will be reconstructed. Access to and from the interchange ramps at Okemos Road will be maintained using temporary ramps.
Stage 1 construction is expected to be completed by mid- to late July 2010.
Stage 2 – Eastbound and westbound I-96 traffic will be shifted onto the newly constructed eastbound I-96 roadway. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be separated by a concrete barrier with two lanes maintained in each direction.
During Stage 2, the westbound I-96 roadway and westbound Okemos Road exit and entrance ramps will be reconstructed. Access to and from the interchange ramps at Okemos Road will be maintained using temporary ramps.
The rest area along westbound I-96 will be closed for reconstruction at the start of Stage 2.
Reconstruction of westbound I-96 is expected to be completed, with all freeway traffic routed back to their normal travel lanes, by November 2010. The rest area will remain closed throughout the winter and is planned to be completed and re-opened by May 2011.
There will be no lane closures during holidays or special events like home football games at Michigan State University.
